Is running a paper fanzine still relevant nowadays?

If Kick and Run would have the possibility to exist physically speaking, I would have liked it to be a proper fanzine. You know those amateur publication, photocopied in emergency and distributed via underground networks. Fanzines are really cool because you can at a glance figure out the whole universe of the mag. Those who run fanzines definitely put a lot of themselves into it creating therefore a unique object.
As a commonplace definition, a fanzine is 1) a free publication (or just to cover the photocopy expenses)  2) representing a sub culture  3) with no commercial interest whatsoever. The big burst of fanzines occurred with the Punk years and is usually related to that period even though you had some Sci-Fi fanzines in the early 20th century.

But now we have blog platforms and we can still create our publication just for the sake of it. But do blogs offer the same possibilities (can you really make it look like yourself?) or do they narrow it to make more affordable (but limited at the same time)? Did technologies and CMS change the deal?

By the way, as a physical magazine, Kick and Run would more likely be called a perzine (contraction for personal magazine). Fanzines carry more the image a sub culture press organ investing a place left empty by more professional and commercial oriented people. Though, our common point with fanzines is that  publishers, editors and contributors are a really small team of impassioned.

By weighting the pros and the cons of blogs possibilities compared to fanzines, the final result is crystal clear.

1) It is easier to figure out the existence of your publication thanks to blog search engines and a good work on your keywords.

2) You can virtually gather your community and make of your blog a ‘virtual meeting point’ by filling up your blog roll, allowing comments to your entries, creating a profile of your publication in social networks…

3) You can turn your publication into a living and interactive title with the help of loads of media (hi quality pictures, videos, slideshows, online music player…); links to other articles; RSS feeds…

And this last point is by far the most interesting as it has completely changed the relationship between the writer and the reader. They can both interfere, exchange, contest and create a forum (a place to discuss freely).
Plus, fanzines claimed to be immediate and done in emergency but in a two horses race, who would nowadays bet on a photocopier rather than a PC+Internet connexion?

So even if fanzines were a piece of paper you could build from A to Z giving it your own personal touch with all the romanticism around it, it is obvious the new technologies offer a better deal.
Back in the days in the 1970’s, the competition between titles was not the same. Let say that existing was already a major point. It was then a question of buzz and to find the good underground network.
And now, what about the multiplication of digital titles ? How to do to face geographical barriers and enlarge your audience?

Blogs offer tons of possibilities that fanzines don’t. And even if the virtual world looks a lot busy right now, it is certainly less saturated than paper magazines.
The strongest is certainly the fact that now you and your readers can be on the same level and it allows you to reinforce the link amongst your ‘community’. Something that despite all the romanticism of a paper publication a fanzine can’t compete with.

Happy holidays in the airports…this video about security measures for my hand luggage in the airport lounge show me lots of unbranded stuff, everything is neutral except the laptop, the cartoon shows proud in the screen a big apple in the middle of his computer. Am I in a commercial center? could be… Then someone ask me for money to receive a plastic bag that I must use to pass the security control, so I am pushed to contribute in the oil crisis with one pound. I am finally ready to take my flight, I only need to check a new screen to know what’s the right gate, is to soon for me, and the screen advise me RELAX AND SHOP.

When Marc Augé defines a non-place in his great book Non-Places “Introduction to an Anthropology of Supermodernity”, and he was thinking in places of transience that do not hold enough significance to be regarded as “places”, he think in places like airports, but didn’t expect how fast capitalism will fuck this theory. Every single non-place is now a place to sell, and all these Auge’s non places became suddenly a trench, a last war zone to think about in a free advertising zone. Maybe in our whole world only exist a “public” free space: Prisons, because these people can’t buy everything, not yet.

La musique comme soma sensoriel

Voici un rapide extrait  du livre de Jean-Marc Mandosio, D’or et de sable aux Éditions de l’encyclopédie des nuisances, Paris, 2008 (p. 281-282) lu sur le blog ‘Une nuit  sous influence‘.

Une vision industrielle et glaciale de la musique qui nous fait prendre un recul intéressant sur sa présence dans notre quotidien et son utilisation.

« La musique du capitalisme industriel ou post-industriel, comme on voudra, présente un trait qui la caractérise, par delà toutes les différences de genres et de style : son omniprésence. Qu’elle soit discrète ou agressive, planante ou rythmée, ancienne ou moderne, savante ou populaire, la musique constitue la “bande son” de la vie quotidienne des sociétés contemporaines, à laquelle il est pratiquement impossible d’échapper. Certains “espaces piétonniers” des centres-villes comportent des haut-parleurs placés à intervalles réguliers, faisant de la rue un centre commercial à ciel ouvert ; quand il n’y a pas de haut-parleurs fixés aux façades des maisons, les boutiques et les cafés en tiennent lieu. Cette “immense accumulation de marchandises” qu’est la société du spectacle implique un accompagnement musical continu, transformant l’existence tout entière en une suite ininterrompue de spots publicitaires. Ceux qui ne veulent pas subir la musique imposée n’ont guère d’autre recours que d’en produire eux-mêmes une plus bruyante et de la transporter avec eux, dans leur auto-radio ou leur baladeur. (…)

C’est bien à ne pas entendre le bruit de fond de notre civilisation que sert toute cette musique constamment diffusée pour ne pas être écoutée. Un bruit si insoutenable dans sa brutalité que nous préférons le dissimuler sous un flot permanent de musique, beaucoup plus rassurant malgré la souffrance de nos oreilles et la confusion mentale qui en résulte, parce qu’il donne l’illusion d’un sens, comme si le chaos pouvait magiquement engendrer un ordre harmonieux. »

If you think curiosity is expensive, try ignorance

Have you ever paid a different price for a concert depending on which band you came for?

Well, I went yesterday to a concert in Camden (The Barfly) to see Mr Hudson and the Library plus two other acts.
The funny thing is that once I arrived at the counter, the guy behind it asked me the question: ‘Which band did you come to see?’. I naively said I was coming for the last and most popular band that night (the first were like really smaller I ignored) so the guy gently asked me for £8.

You will tell me that this price is okay for 3 bands but I lately figured out that if I had mentioned the first band (and brought an homemade flyer they did especially for the night you just had to pick up on tables), I would have just paid £5! What does that mean?

Forget about the £3 pounds difference.
I came for the whole night and 3 bands are on the bill. I will see them all in the end.
Why should I be supposed to pay different prices depending on my musical tastes?
The only discounts I knew before were related to your professional situation but never for the band I would come for!

It is like going to the theatre and you only pay half price because you especially came for the 2nd act. The play is 5 acts long, you will see them all but you love the 2nd act so you pay a different price from the person who likes the 3rd one! Does that make any sense to you?
And what if I just pop in to discover bands for curiosity and I don’t know any of them?

There is just a concept I do not get here…

Tot combatint la ignorància…

Avui em sento trist per una triple raó. En primer lloc perquè el primer post que escriuré en català en aquest blog es per defendre aquesta mil·lenària llengua que ha estat atacada per monarquies, dictadures i ara per suposats demòcrates de casa bona (aquestes noves generacions que l’hi han pillat el gust a això de les manifestacions i els manifestos, encara que als seus pares els hi agradava més seure als ministeris i signar ordres de tortura i penes de mort).

En segon lloc perquè les llengües sempre han servit com a punt de trobada, ja que són els ponts invisibles que ens uneixen a tots per sobre de fronteres i creences, i per això crec que hauríem de parlar més de l’amor cap a les llengües, cap a les cultures, i mai de l’odi cap a unes altres. Apartheid llingüistic a Catalunya, Euskadi i Galizia? nosaltres si que el vàrem conèixer amb Franco l’apartheid, i abans amb Primo de Rivera, i abans amb Felip V…

I en tercer lloc, perquè darrerament estem patint una sobredosi de manifestos per part d’ intel·lectuals liberals i auto-denominats lliurepensadors (del tipus Mario Vargas Llosa, Félix de Azúa, Albert Boadella, Arcadi Espada, Álvaro Pombo, Fernando Savater, Fernando Sosa Wagner, Horacio Vázquez-Rial etc.) que són sempre els mateixos i s’agrupen sota diferents sigles cada pocs mesos: Ciutadans, UPyD (Unión de Pallasos y Demagogos?), etc…recordant-me cada vegada més als seus enemics de l’esquerra Abertzale, els quals, en aquest cas, es veuen forçats a canviar de sigles cada poc temps també.

I es que no puc entendre la ofensiva del Mundo denominada “Manifiesto en defensa del castellano”. Jo sóc català, estimo la meva llengua i la meva terra i costums, les quals no són ni millors ni pitjors que les de ningú. He estudiat castellà perquè forma part de la cultura de Catalunya, es part de la nostre identitat, i em permet connectar-me amb una comunitat de milions de persones a la resta de la península i al continent Americà. Estimo el castellà com a llengua igual que altres idiomes perquè tenen una utilitat indubtable, però barrejar això amb banderes i conceptes nacionals es un gran error. Per a mi el castellà es un idioma i punt, i si, llastimosament s’ha fet servir per a reprimir el meu poble durant milers d’ anys, i ha anat a companyat d’expressions i banderes que encara perduren. Per això no jutjaré mai als que no la vulguin fer servir (encara que la parlin), ho comprenc,estan en el seu dret. Aquí la gran veritat es que tothom pot viure en castellà a Barcelona o Girona, conec milers de persones que ho fan cada dia sense cap problema. Tan sols la gent de Madrid, que per cert tan sols parla 1 de les 4 llengües oficials de l’Estat, es queixen del suposat apartheid, mentre que jo no puc expressar-me en aquestes llengües (català, euskara, galego) a la resta de l’Estat.

El que passa massa sovint a Espanya es que es vol jugar a l’estratègia de la tensió, i el únics que es queixen de la “balcanització” d’Espanya són precisament els que la volen, el que els hi encantaria que hi hagués una nova Terra Lliure que generes màrtirs per la causa, i dir que la nostre llengua, es la llengua dels terroristes.

A sobre i en mig de la crisi econòmica, hem de aguantar aquests cadells de falangistes intentant generar encara més rencor, i es que ja es hora de dir prou, no sé que s’han pensat. Si ens neguen la possibilitat de parlar, si ens neguen la possibilitat de expressar-nos en la nostre llengua, que volen que fem? Si no ha diàleg tan sols hi ha guerra, i a això a ells els hi encantaria, perquè s’han avorrit de matar al tercer món per petroli, i ara volen brega a casa.
